Raina, the author of Smile was born and grew up in San Francisco. In fact, Raina even has two younger siblings named Amara and William.
According to the author of Smile book, she knocked out two front teeth when she was in sixth grade. As a result, she needed braces and a lot of surgery. During that time, she was studying at Lowell High School, San Francisco. Later on, she studied illustration at New York’s School of Visual Arts.

Here, she started selling self-published autobiographical stories and vignettes from her life. In fact, she even produced seven mini-comics the Take Out series between 2002 and 2005. Raina said that its the disciplined structure and schedule of publishing a weekly webcomic that encouraged her to develop the book Smile. The thought of publishing comics came into her mind from creating graphic novel adaptations of Baby-Sitters Club novels.
In 2004, she met an editor from Scholastic in an art gallery. Here, she got to know that Scholastic was thinking of setting up a graphic novel imprint. After a while, she met that editor’s boss who invited her to pitch an idea for Scholastic. They asked her to work up a graphic novel adaptation.
Later, Scholastic through its imprint Graphix published four graphic novels in the series. They were Kristy’s Great Idea, The Truth About Stacey, Mary Anne Saves the Day, and Claudia and Mean Janine.
In 2010, the author of Smile released a print graphic novel version of her webcomic Smile. In 2011, this webcomic was featured on a New York Times bestseller list. In fact, even in 2020, Smile is still on the New York Times Bestseller List for Graphic Books and Manga.
