Ann Patchett was born on 2 December 1963 in Los Angeles, California to Frank Patchett and Jeanne Ray. Her parents divorced when she was young. Her mother remarried and the family moved to Nashville, Tennessee when Patchett was six. Ann takes part in St. Bernard Academy which is a private Catholic school for girls in Nashville, Tennessee. And after that, she attended Sarah Lawrence College for graduation.
In her late 20s, Patchett earned a fellowship at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. During this time she wrote her first novel, The Patron Saint of Liars, which was published in 1992. She was later part of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa, where she lived with memoirist and poet Lucy Greeley.
She co-founded a bookstore in 2010 with Karen Hayes, Parnassus Books, in Nashville, which opened in 2011. Patchett’s first published work was in The Paris Review, a story Sarah Lawrence published before she graduated from college. Ann worked at Seventeen magazine for 9 years. Where she wrote mainly non-fiction, and the magazine published one out of every five articles she wrote.
Her second novel Taft won the Janet Hedinger Kafka Award in 1994. In 1997, her 3rd novel The Magician’s Assistant was published.
